Background
The American Revolution, also accepted as the Revolutionary War or the War for Independence, won independence from Britain. Fighting began at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, more than a year before independence was declared, and formally ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The decisive break came at Yorktown in 1781, where a combined American and French force trapped a British army, though fighting continued afterward. France's entry in 1778 mattered enormously, supplying money, a navy, and troops, and turning a colonial rebellion into a wider war Britain had to fight on several fronts. Roughly a fifth of colonists stayed loyal to the crown, and tens of thousands of them left for Canada or Britain when it ended, so this was also a civil conflict.
