Background
Any one of these answers: first Secretary of the Treasury, one of the writers of the Federalist Papers, helped establish the First Bank of the United States, aide to General George Washington, and member of the Continental Congress. Hamilton was born in the Caribbean and arrived with no family money or standing, which set him apart from the Virginia planters and Boston lawyers around him. As Treasury Secretary he built the country's financial system: he had the federal government assume the states' war debts, created a national bank, established a mint, and pushed tariffs to encourage manufacturing. Jefferson opposed nearly all of it, and their quarrel became the first party division. Hamilton died in 1804 in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.
