Background
Any one of these answers: Father of Our Country, first president of the United States, general of the Continental Army, and president of the Constitutional Convention. Washington's reputation rests less on winning battles, since he lost many, than on holding an underpaid and often unfed army together for eight years and then surrendering power twice. He resigned his commission in 1783 rather than turning military success into personal rule, and he stepped down after two terms in 1797 when he could have stayed. That second choice set the two-term custom that held until 1940 and became the Twenty-second Amendment in 1951. He presided over the 1787 convention largely in silence, and lending his name to the result helped ratification more than any argument did.
