Background on Michigan
Lansing is Michigan's capital, and Detroit, many times larger, is not — the seat moved inland in 1847, partly because a capital sitting on the Canadian border felt unsafe after two wars with Britain. Michigan became the 26th state in 1837. It has 13 congressional districts and 15 electoral votes. Michigan is where two answers to the American innovation question were made practical: the automobile, and the moving assembly line introduced near Detroit in 1913, which cut the time to build a car from twelve hours to about ninety minutes and put one within reach of an ordinary wage. Only the capital among the four answers on this page is permanent.
