Each state's page on this site names the current governor, checked every night against two independent public records; confirm the name on your state government's official website before the interview. Residents of the District of Columbia should answer that D.C. does not have a governor, which is the answer USCIS gives for them, and people in the territories name their own governor. A governor leads the executive branch of a state much as the president leads the federal one: signing or vetoing bills passed by the state legislature, commanding the state National Guard when it has not been called into federal service, appointing state officials and often judges, and granting pardons for state crimes. Most governors serve four-year terms and most states limit them to two. Many also hold a line-item veto, which the president does not have.
