Background
Veterans Day honors people in the U.S. military, and honoring people who have served is the other accepted phrasing. It falls on November 11, and the date is not arbitrary: the fighting in World War I stopped at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. The holiday was first called Armistice Day for that reason and was renamed in 1954 to include veterans of every conflict. Unlike Memorial Day it stays on its calendar date rather than moving to a Monday, after an attempt to shift it in the 1970s met objections and was reversed. The distinction the test draws is worth keeping: this day is for all who served, Memorial Day for those who died.
