Background
Any one of these answers: Fort Sumter, the Emancipation Proclamation, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Sherman's March, the surrender at Appomattox, Antietam, or Lincoln's assassination. Several fall in one decisive stretch. Antietam in September 1862 was the bloodiest single day in American history, with about 23,000 casualties, and the narrow Union result gave Lincoln the moment he had been waiting for to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Gettysburg and Vicksburg both ended in the first days of July 1863, the first stopping Lee's invasion of the North and the second giving the Union control of the Mississippi and cutting the Confederacy in two. Sherman's march through Georgia in late 1864 destroyed a region's capacity to make war. Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, five days after Appomattox.
