Background

Any one of these answers: Bunker Hill, the Declaration of Independence, Washington crossing the Delaware, Saratoga, Valley Forge, or Yorktown. Two of them decided the war. Saratoga in 1777 was the victory that convinced France to enter openly, bringing money, ships, and soldiers to a cause that badly needed all three. Yorktown in 1781 trapped a British army between American and French troops on land and the French fleet at sea, and the surrender there broke British will to continue. Valley Forge was no battle at all but a winter encampment in 1777 and 1778 where disease and shortage killed roughly two thousand men, and where the army was drilled into a more disciplined force. Bunker Hill, though a British win, showed the fighting would be costly.
