Background

Any one of these answers: the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, or the Spanish-American War. Each changed the country's shape or its standing. The War of 1812 against Britain settled little on paper but ended any talk of returning to British influence and produced the national anthem. The Mexican-American War, from 1846 to 1848, took the Southwest and California, and the argument over whether slavery would extend into that new land pushed the country toward civil war. The Civil War, 1861 to 1865, was by far the deadliest, killing roughly 620,000 soldiers, and it ended slavery. The Spanish-American War in 1898 lasted months and left the United States holding overseas possessions for the first time.
