Background
Any one of these answers: the Global War on Terror, the War in Afghanistan, or the War in Iraq. Afghanistan began in October 2001, weeks after the attacks, aimed at al-Qaeda and the Taliban government that sheltered it, and it became the longest war in American history, ending with a withdrawal in August 2021. The Iraq War began in March 2003 on the stated grounds that Iraq held weapons of mass destruction, which were not found; major combat gave way to years of occupation and insurgency, and American forces largely left by 2011. Neither was a declared war. Both proceeded under authorizations for the use of military force, the pattern for every conflict since 1945.
