Background

Naming any one tribe from the official list answers the question, for example Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Apache, or Hopi. There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States today, and the list on the test is only a sample of them. Recognition is a legal status rather than a label: a recognized tribe is a sovereign nation with its own government, courts, and authority over its members and land, dealing with Washington on a government-to-government basis. That sovereignty predates the Constitution, which mentions commerce with the tribes in Article I. Nineteenth-century removal policy pushed many nations far from their homelands, most infamously along the Trail of Tears, which is why several tribes with eastern names now have their largest populations in Oklahoma.
