Background on Texas
Austin is Texas's capital, though Houston, San Antonio and Dallas are all larger — the capital question catches people here for exactly that reason. Texas became the 28th state in 1845, and it is the only state that was an independent republic first, having broken from Mexico in 1836 and governed itself for nearly a decade before annexation. That annexation led directly to the Mexican-American War, one of the accepted answers to the question about wars fought in the 1800s. Texas now has 38 congressional districts and 40 electoral votes, second only to California, and it gained seats again after the 2020 census. With 38 districts, your representative depends entirely on your address.
