Background on Rhode Island
Providence is Rhode Island's capital and its largest city, founded in 1636 by Roger Williams after Massachusetts banished him over his religious views — which makes the state the sharpest example of colonists coming for religious freedom, one of the accepted answers on the test. Rhode Island is the smallest state by area and was the last of the thirteen original states to ratify the Constitution, becoming the 13th state in 1790, more than a year after the new government had begun operating. It had refused even to send delegates to the 1787 convention. It has 2 congressional districts and 4 electoral votes. Note that being the smallest state changes nothing about the senator answer: Rhode Island sends two, exactly as Texas and California do.
