Background on New Jersey
Trenton is New Jersey's capital, while Newark and Jersey City are both larger. New Jersey is one of the thirteen original states and became the 3rd state in 1787, ratifying within weeks of Delaware and Pennsylvania. It has 12 congressional districts and 14 electoral votes, a large delegation for a small area, since this is the most densely populated state in the country. Trenton itself is an accepted answer to another question: Washington crossed the Delaware on the night of December 25, 1776, and struck the garrison at Trenton the next morning, a small victory that kept the Revolution alive after a season of defeats. More Revolutionary engagements were fought in New Jersey than in any other state, which is why it is sometimes called the crossroads of the Revolution.
