Background on Nevada
Carson City is Nevada's capital, and Las Vegas, roughly ten times larger, is not the answer. Nevada became the 36th state in October 1864, admitted in haste during the Civil War: the Union wanted another free state's votes for the Thirteenth Amendment and for Lincoln's reelection, and the state constitution was telegraphed to Washington to make the deadline. It has 4 congressional districts and 6 electoral votes. That rushed admission connects this page to the amendment questions, since the Thirteenth is the one that abolished slavery everywhere. Among the four state answers here, the capital is the only one that will still be right in ten years. Carson City is also among the smallest capitals in the country, and the population is concentrated so heavily around Las Vegas that most Nevadans live hundreds of miles from their statehouse.
