Background on Missouri
Jefferson City is Missouri's capital, a small city on the river named for Thomas Jefferson, while Kansas City and St. Louis are each many times its size. Missouri became the 24th state in 1821 under the Missouri Compromise, admitted as a slave state and paired with free Maine so that the Senate stayed balanced. It has 8 congressional districts and 10 electoral votes. The state sits behind two other test answers: Lewis and Clark set out from the St. Louis area to survey the Louisiana Purchase, and the Dred Scott case began in Missouri courts, the decision the Fourteenth Amendment was written to overturn. Only the capital is a permanent answer among the four.
