Background
The Statue of Liberty stands in New York Harbor, on Liberty Island, and either answer is accepted. The island is federal land, and although it sits in New Jersey waters, the statue itself has been held to be part of New York. France gave it to the United States in 1886 to mark the centennial of independence and the alliance between the two countries. Its sculptor was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and its internal iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel. The figure holds a torch and a tablet bearing the date July 4, 1776, and a broken chain lies at her feet, a detail few visitors notice. The copper skin, originally the color of a penny, weathered to green within about thirty years.
