Background
Naming any two of the promises answers the question: give up loyalty to other countries, defend the Constitution, obey the laws of the United States, serve in the military if needed, do important work for the nation if needed, and be loyal to the United States. The oath is spoken aloud at a public ceremony, and reciting it is the moment citizenship takes effect. Two of the promises are commonly misread. Renouncing loyalty to a former country is a statement of allegiance under American law and does not by itself settle what another country's own law says about its nationals. And the promise to serve is conditional, meaning if the law should ever call for it, not a commitment being made in advance.
